It's a myth in my opinion. Anything outside of yourself can change and therefor impact your attachment of security. It can be taken away, your power lays outside of yourself and within something exterior. Such as money, a job or a spouse. So security has to come from within. If you don't go within you go without. Security is knowing you can accomplish something or anything even if it was all taken away from you. Take all my money? I'll make it again. This is a great subject Matt, one that I believe requires it's own post. I believe you hit it on the head, like John C Maxwell who aptly titled one of his books "Failing forward."
