3 Steps To Longer Lasting Decisions

An attractive girl deciding between sweets and...

How To Make More Definite Decisions

How many times have you looked up and asked yourself, “If I knew then what I knew now my life would be completely different today.”

I believe we all could probably say this to ourselves but why live in regret even just a little?

I heard it best said from my life coach, “look at your life today and that’s what you’re committed to.” Even if you say you desire more money, or to connect with your soul mate, or to create a better relationship with your spouse, all you have to do is look at your results today and that is what you’re committed to.

I heard some insights yesterday what I believe will assist me in staying on track with decisions I make today much more than ever before and I wanted to share them with you.

The Power of Priorities

One reason I’ve found I didn’t hit targets in my personal, spiritual or business life is that I hadn’t set priorities. Everything else tends to get in the way of your desired experiences or outcomes when you haven’t set something as a priority.

Such as:

  • meditation
  • morning exercise
  • eating right
  • building a business

Example 1: A person says they desire a home based business that will provide them the freedom from their 9 to 5 job. However every day they allow something to get into the way of taking action and building that business. Whether it’s attending trainings or doing the daily disciplines that lead to their desired results things always get in the way.

Example 2: You decide you want to become more healthy by eating right and exercising however you find yourself surrounded by bad food choices, going to bed late, therefor waking up late and not exercising. This effects you meditating first thing in the morning so it also affects your spiritual life.

A priority could be considered your primary choice. However there is a secondary choice that supports your primary choice.

The Power of Choice

Achieving consciousness based on outcome is a hard way to live. It’s a good way to learn though. I know because I’ve done it so much in the past and still continue to dance with that shadow today. I say dance because I’m much more aware of it today than I was yesterday.

The choices we make today impacts our lifestyle of tomorrow. However do you really live with that mindset?  Once you’ve made something a priority making the choice to stick with it is the key. In this case we have a few choices to make.

One thing I heard yesterday:

A primary choice, like deciding to be healthy has a secondary choice that supports it. Like exercising everyday. The secondary choice is the action that is required to support the primary choice.

Consider this when you make choices about your lifestyle. There are two to be made. A primary choice and a secondary choice that supports it. It will require discipline in order to stay consistent with your secondary choice.

The Power of Discipline

Once you’ve made ________ a priority, discipline yourself to make the right choices every day.

A secondary choice is otherwise called a habit.

Discipline is the stuff that separates those who do and those who don’t. Those who end up with the results they desire and those who don’t.

As I was listening to Jeff Olson who wrote the book The Slight Edge yesterday live in Orlando and he put it so well:

  1. Show Up
  2. Be Consistent
  3. Do It With A Good Attitude

When you can commit to your secondary choice with those 3 things in mind you’ll supersede well over 70% of everyone else in your endeavors.

So what have you made a priority in your life today based on your experiences and is there anything you can do differently?

What else would you add to this list of insights?

    Tony Great post as always!

Once again you get the wheels turning in my brain..LOL! I loved the quote “The Life You are now living, is the Life you are committed to.”

As I was mulling this over, over my cup of starbucks yesterday it caused me to ask this question which I’d like your comments on…

    BUT 1st a couple of comments……….
    a) On HABITS…………… “What you plant into your HABITS hops into your FUTURE, To change your LIFE,you must change your Habits, To change your Habits you must change your OBSESSION, to change your obsession, you must change your FOCUS.”(Joe Schroeder)
    b) On Olson’s book… show up, be consistent, have a good attitude reminds me of How Ramone Williamson said it
    1) Show up on TIME, 2) Do what You say You are going to do, 3) COMPLETE what you start 4) Say PLEASE & THANK YOU

QUESTION: How does one move their life forward to bring about Their desired and Abundant & Fulfilling Lifestyle? I mean, so many times the Life I am now living seems to be so FAR from where I want to GO. I definitely believe another way of stating the great Quote above is “What you Think about you Bring About”…The life I currently live(Though I am currently dealing with financial challenges due to a layoff) is Good,,But I want it to be GREATER…I want to Live a Life of more Abundance, where I do not have to be concerned with how all my financial bases are covered,, so I can have a Greater Influence in helping others….so if we continue to DWELL on the negativity of our situation(like me,,$$ is tight),I will GET more of the same & we should be dwelling on the LIFESTYLE we desire for the future(6mos, 2yrs, 10yrs, down the road)..& YET Currently (ie. TODAY) bills gotta be paid & mouths fed…ONE CANNOT ignore that…so what is the true balance between these seemingly opposite views In your Opinion:-)?

Thanks for this great BLOG & any input you can give is greatly appreciated

    Matt

Matt, My apologies my good friend for getting back to you so late on this! I wrote you an answer but it’s turned into an entire blog post! I’m dedicating a post to you and your question because I ended up with a book instead of a quick answer! (Hope you don’t mind) It’s a great question that deserves an in depth answer.
